Register for 2021 Spring Academies
We are pleased to offer more spring development this year, including on-ice female and male programs, dryland training, intra-squad games and Breakfast Clubs. Our Academy – particularly our Spring Program – is unique in that we aren’t only looking to build teams to take to various tournaments, and then dropping any young athlete who doesn’t make the top team. While we will certainly be participating in tournaments throughout the Spring and Summer, our focus is on the process of getting these kids to build on their unique strengths and overcome their weaknesses. That is the foundation of our programming and we believe it’s how kids get better and enjoy the game more.
Please see below for all the details, including dates, cost and how to register.
FEMALE Spring Academy U11 to U15
Our Female Spring Academy offers kids from U11 to U15 the chance to build their physical literacy, their confidence as athletes, and their enthusiasm for hockey. this is our most robust program, where we offer both on-ice and off-ice training. At SDR Academy, our goal is to always push the kids while maintaining both a learning and fun environment. This means that we focus on five principles: preparing our young athletes to be physically fit for the game; engaging the kids in a way that makes them want to improve; teaching the game; teaching enjoyment of the game; and ensuring the kids understand their strengths and weaknesses as athletes.
From April through the end of June, we will be offering two-day-a-week on-ice and off-ice sessions that will be held back-to-back to make it easier for planning other activities. We are still working on finalizing details, but we will hold these sessions on weekday evenings. Cost includes regular intra-squad games and SDR Academy jersey.
On-ice sessions
We will hold one-hour on-ice sessions twice a week lead. We will split these sessions into skills focus and team development, so our young athletes improve their individual skills, their team play, and build their hockey sense.
Dryland sessions
Our one-hour dryland training will be held either before or after the bi-weekly ice sessions where we focus on getting kids fit for the game.

This means that we focus on five principles: preparing our young athletes to be physically fit for the game; engaging the kids in a way that makes them want to improve; teaching the game; teaching enjoyment of the game; and ensuring the kids understand their strengths and weaknesses as athletes.
Our Spring sessions run from April through June and will include 20 ice times and 20 dryland sessions. Theses sessions will run back-to-back at the same location (TBD), allowing for more flexibility for our young athletes and their families to partake in other events and activities throughout the week. Spring Breakfast Club
We will be again offering our signature Breakfast Club on-ice training on Wednesday mornings at 6:30 a.m. at West Hillhurst Arena beginning April 7 and running through June 16.
About Breakfast Club
The sessions will allow the kids to refine the details of their game where we’ll focus on skating to generate and maintain speed with the puck while attacking the middle of the ice. It’s no secret that the game is being played faster than ever – and the ability to skate as efficiently as possible will increase puck time, and a player’s impact on the game. Other details we’ll focus on include:
- Skating skills – Inside and outside edges
- Separating upper body from lower body – puck handling while jumping over an obstacle
- Passing and receiving in traffic
- Evasive skating and puck handling
- Shooting with proper technique to allow for a variety of shots
- Learning to protect the puck and make a play
- Going into a battle to create a play
