How to Choose the Right Hockey Camp

You want your child to get better. You've heard about hockey camps, but there are dozens of options out there. Different coaches. Different formats. Different price points. How do you know which one is actually worth it?

Choosing the right hockey camp in Calgary comes down to a few key things. Here's how to cut through the noise and find a program that moves the needle.

Look at What's Actually Being Taught

Not all camps are built the same. Some are fun, high-energy skates with little structured learning. Others are built around specific skill development, such as skating mechanics, shot release, puck handling, positioning, or hockey IQ.

Ask for the curriculum before you sign up. A quality hockey camp should be able to tell you exactly what players will work on each day. If there's no clear answer, that is a red flag.

Consider the Ratio of Players to Coaches

This is one of the most overlooked factors in youth hockey development. A large group with one coach means your child spends more time waiting and less time actually touching the puck.

Smaller group sessions allow for real-time feedback and individual correction. That feedback loop is where real improvement happens. Look for programs that prioritize quality reps over high headcounts.

Match the Camp to Where Your Player Is Right Now

A beginner skater in an advanced skills camp is going to struggle. A highly skilled player in a fundamentals-only camp is going to coast. Neither outcome helps.

Choose a camp that matches your child's current level and targets the specific gaps in their game. Talk to the coaching staff if you're unsure. A good program will assess fit honestly rather than just take your registration fee.

Off-Ice Programming Matters More Than You Think

The best hockey development programs today include off-ice training components: strength, speed, agility, and mental preparation. If a camp is only putting kids on the ice, it's leaving a significant part of development untouched.

Ask whether there's any off-ice or dryland training included. It signals that the program understands holistic athlete development, not just skating drills.

Check Who's Coaching

Coaching credentials and experience matter, but so does communication style. A coach who played at a high level but can't connect with young players won't get the most out of them.

Look for coaches who have experience working with youth athletes specifically. Read reviews, ask other hockey families, and if possible, watch a session before enrolling.

Make the Most of This Summer

The off-season is when serious players separate themselves. The right camp can be a turning point in your child's development. It should challenge your child, give structured skill work, and develop them as a complete athlete.

At SDR Academy, our programs are built around exactly that. From the Shooting Room to ice sessions and the Shield program, we develop players from the ground up with coaches who care about the whole athlete.
