Why Disappointments Hurt (And Why They Matter)
Young players invest time, emotion, and energy into tryouts. When they don’t make the cut, it can feel like failure. But with the right tools and guidance, this moment can become a turning point. Handling disappointment well builds emotional maturity and long-term motivation.
How Parents Can Help Their Athlete Cope
Validate Their Feelings: Don’t brush off their emotions. Let them feel sad, frustrated, or disappointed. Say, “I know this hurts. It’s okay to feel this way.”
Don’t Rush to Fix It: Your child doesn’t need immediate solutions. They need space to process. Once they’re ready, shift the conversation to what they’ve learned and how they can grow.
Reframe the Moment: Help them see this as one step in a bigger journey. Share stories of players or professionals who faced setbacks but came back stronger. Growth isn’t linear, it’s built on moments like these.
Support Their Next Steps: Encourage goal setting: “Let’s focus on what you can work on over the next few months.” Help them find another opportunity, whether it’s another team, extra training, or skill development.
