Alex Young

Coach

Alex Young brings a wealth of elite playing experience and a passion for skill development to the SDR coaching staff. A 2020 NHL draft pick of the San Jose Sharks, Alex’s journey includes stints with the Calgary Royals U15 and U16 AAA teams, three seasons in the AJHL, four years competing in NCAA Division I, and a year in the ECHL. His time on the ice taught him firsthand that growth comes through both success and setback, and he now channels that insight into helping his players embrace challenges, build unshakeable confidence, and understand that true improvement is a process.

Off the ice, Alex has honed his teaching skills as a mentor and skills coach at the David Marcoux School of Goaltending and through numerous volunteer roles with local minor hockey clubs. He’s eager to pursue his Hockey Canada coaching certification and already works effectively with athletes aged eight to fourteen. Alex’s philosophy centers on creating a positive, encouraging environment where a strong foundation of skills is built through deliberate repetition—always underpinned by a positive attitude and the understanding that failure is simply the fuel for future success.

When he’s not breaking down tape or designing drills, Alex fuels up with grilled chicken, pasta, sweet potatoes, and a bread roll, and dreams of one day calling plays for the Boston Bruins—who he admires for their blend of skill and grit. He measures progress by detailed, constructive feedback delivered with genuine care, guided by his mantra: “Your biggest opponent is yourself.” Whether he’s teaching the nuances of backhand passing or recalling the thrill of winning the ECAC championship to clinch an NCAA tournament berth, Alex reminds every athlete that staying in shape is key—and that maintaining fitness is far easier than trying to rebuild it later.uddle
