Benjamin Stang

Benjamin’s journey began on Calgary’s ball-hockey courts, where he honed his skills against the province’s best before advancing to Western Challenge Cups and national tournaments in both youth and men’s divisions. That competitive fire fueled his transition to coaching in 2017, earning his NCCP certification and leading teams across U9–U18 categories at city, provincial, and western championship levels. His foundational philosophy is simple: each player should get exactly what they want from the game—whether that’s refining a specific skill, boosting confidence, or simply falling deeper in love with hockey.

Central to Benjamin’s approach is helping athletes understand why drills and strategies work. By deconstructing the reasoning behind positioning, puck movement, and decision-making, he ensures lessons stick and can be adapted to any game situation. Practices blend technical instruction—like mastering multiple positions for true versatility—with game-sense drills and small-group discussions. Every session wraps with a quick debrief so players leave knowing not just how to perform a skill, but why it matters.

Off the court, Benjamin fuels up with salmon, rice, kale, tomatoes, and peas before stepping into the rink. He dreams of one day calling the Boston Bruins’ plays—admiring their culture of excellence and leadership—and looks to Patrice Bergeron as the ultimate model of skill, humility, and two-way brilliance. His coaching style is all about fairness, encouragement, and adaptability, guided by his mother’s timeless advice: “Don’t worry about the stats—they’re just numbers. Remember why you play, and enjoy it.” He kicks off warm-ups to “Rattle Them Bones” by The Lazys and celebrates his favorite personal highlight: warming up at Winnipeg’s Canada Life Centre during a nationals tournament. Above all, Benjamin reminds every athlete to find balance—because true success comes from thriving both on and off the ice.
