Colton Newitt

Coach

Colton’s hockey story began the moment he first laced up, playing tier 1 and 2 hockey with the Blackfoot Chiefs until COVID curtailed his final season at 17. Craving connection to the game, he stepped behind the bench as his little brother’s head coach and discovered a passion for teaching that’s only grown over the past three years. Armed with NCCP Online Coach 1 & 2 credentials, Checking Skills Level 1, and Coach 2-level training in safety and on-ice development, he’s focused exclusively on U18 athletes—guiding them to improve through structured on-ice training, targeted passing drills, and whole-ice agility circuits.

Colton’s philosophy centers on continuous improvement and attitude: “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” He cultivates an adaptive, positive environment where players learn to embrace challenges and internalize the why behind each drill. Practices begin with dynamic warm-ups and progress into skill stations—tight-radius puck movement, decision-making small-area games, and burst-speed agility ladders—before culminating in coach-led debriefs that reinforce learning points and set daily goals.

Off the ice, Colton fuels up on plain spaghetti—his go-to for clean energy—and dreams of drawing up plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs, admiring their unparalleled depth. Inspired by Sidney Crosby’s relentless work ethic and humility, he kicks off warm-ups to Jay-Z’s “Run This Town” and shares his proudest moment with athletes: winning gold at his final tournament as his brother’s coach, surrounded by family. Always pushing for balance, he reminds players to focus on quickness and agility while maintaining a growth mindset, ensuring they leave every session more confident, more skilled, and hungrier for the next challenge.
