Mikayla Loewen

Coach

Mikayla’s hockey journey began in Prespatou, BC, and carried her through four seasons at the collegiate level: she honed her all-around game in NCAA Division III before becoming a two-time assistant captain for SAIT’s ACAC squad. Alongside her on-ice leadership, she cultivated a passion for teaching—volunteering as a minor-hockey assistant coach, then serving SDR Academy last spring with the U9/U11 Her-ricanes and this winter supporting the U11 GHC Outlaws. Now, as she prepares to earn her Hockey Canada Coach 2 certification this spring, Mikayla brings both fresh playing insight and growing pedagogical expertise to her U9–U15 groups.

Central to her philosophy is celebrating the journey: she believes that lasting improvement comes from embracing the process, not fixating on short-term outcomes. Every practice is structured to amplify each athlete’s unique strengths—whether that’s a blazing burst of acceleration, a pinpoint pass, or a powerful shot. Sessions begin with dynamic warm-ups and edge-control drills, progress into strength-based small-area games tailored to individual skill sets, and conclude with strategic debriefs where players set personal goals for their next steps. By teaching athletes to “understand your strengths and what you bring to the team,” Mikayla ensures they master their roles and build confidence from the inside out.

Off the ice, Mikayla refuels with chicken parmesan and a protein smoothie before hitting the rink, and dreams of drawing up gritty, skillful plays for the Montreal Victoire. She draws inspiration from Abby Roque’s fearless two-way play and leads warm-ups to Limp Bizkit’s “Break Stuff,” getting everyone amped to compete. Her favorite personal highlight—a championship win at age 13 alongside her cousins—underscores her belief that hockey is both family and community. With a focus on skating-edge mastery, strategic thinking, and “training like an athlete, not a body-builder,” Coach Loewen’s blend of elite experience and developmental insight will empower you to reach your full potential—on and off the ice.
