Tyrell Bourk
Coach
Tyrell’s hockey path began in Lethbridge’s minor leagues, progressed through two years of midget AA and three seasons of junior hockey, and led him to his current role as a college athlete in his fifth year of play. Alongside competing, he’s gained practical coaching experience running U15 practices, supporting U10 sessions, and even leading goalie shooter drills at summer camps. Though he’s still exploring formal certifications, Tyrell’s commitment to “wake up every day, put your best foot forward, control your attitude and work ethic” drives every practice he leads.
His coaching philosophy balances technical development with personal growth: he believes that on-ice improvement is paramount, but that character traits like humility, integrity, and courage prepare athletes for life beyond hockey. Practices begin with dynamic warm-ups and skating-edge drills—because at higher levels “you can have the best shot, but if you can’t keep up with play, it will catch up with you”—and progress into position-specific skill stations and small-area games designed to reinforce decision-making under pressure. Each session wraps with a collaborative debrief, setting concrete goals and reinforcing Tyrell’s mantra: “It’s better to be prepared for an opportunity and not get one, rather than to get an opportunity and not be prepared.”
Off the ice, Tyrell fuels his energy with chicken, rice, broccoli, a protein shake, and coffee, and dreams of coaching the Calgary Flames—his hometown pride—while learning from Pavel Datsyuk’s legendary skill and hockey IQ. He kicks off practices to ACDC’s “Hells Bells” and shares his proudest comeback story: returning to hockey in grade 11 after a two-year hiatus to earn a midget AA roster spot. By being the hardest worker in the gym—first in, last out—Tyrell models the long-term dedication he preaches, ensuring every athlete leaves the rink stronger, faster, and more ready for the next challenge.
